The City
Almere, the young city of the Netherlands
Almere is a modern city with bold architecture and a sleek skyline. The first homes were built from 1975, and today it is one of the largest cities in the Netherlands. The mayor affectionately calls it the New York of the polder.
For centuries this was the Zuiderzee, and Almere still lies about 5 metres below sea level. The city is named after the water called Almere, in the Middle Ages a lake or inland sea roughly where the IJsselmeer is now. Our city has carried that name since 1971. Water runs through every district, and the coastline is no less than 42 kilometres long.

Discovering a city from the water is nothing like seeing it from land. On one of our cruises you experience a modern city surrounded by greenery. You learn why the Weerwater is called that, which architects shaped the skyline and which building is the most expensive on it.
